@
Harper Held It's a bit more complex. Look up the hashtags #
DefederateProject92, #
DefederateBarcelona, #
DefederateMeta, #
DefederateInstagram and #
DefederateFacebook.
Here's the story:
#
Meta, formerly #
Facebook, is working on a new Twitter competitor named #
Threads, formerly #
Barcelona, formerly #
P92. That thing is planned to understand #
ActivityPub.
It's this thing that many #
Mastodon instances want to defederate from, and they want to do that as soon as Threads goes online. The reason is because people fear that Meta will first suck all kinds of data out of the #
Fediverse and sell it for money, and that Meta will then basically take over the Fediverse and/or make everything in the Fediverse that isn't their Threads irrelevant.
Google did the latter with XMPP/Jabber and RSS already, so we have a precedence.
I don't know why there isn't that much activity on the other Fediverse projects. Maybe it's because Mastodon has more instances than everything else combined, maybe it's because this discussion itself is almost entirely happening on Mastodon (as if nobody on the other projects could read any of this), maybe it's because the instance admins on the other projects aren't that sensitive, or maybe it's a rest of wanting the Fediverse to be only Mastodon.
