Review by Alex Henderson
"..this album isn't experimental or forward-thinking...But it's easy to enjoy if you appreciate swinging, inspired bop along the lines of Milt Jackson, who is one of Pike's primary influences"

Latin Mann (subtitled Afro to Bossa to Blues) is an album by American jazz flautist Herbie Mann recorded for the Columbia label and released in 1965.

This is Herbie Mann’s love letter to Latin music. As usual, he blows your mind with his skill on flute. But that’s not what this albums all about. Superb arrangements and backup make this one of his fullest sounding albums. Mann seamlessly transitions from a jazz small group feel to that of a Tito Puente big band and back again. His sideman all get their time in the spotlight and it is well worth it. (I’m a sucker for Dave Pike on vibes.) A uniquely Latin beat is mostly observed here but swing and blues creep in and give these tracks a subtle difference that makes this album stand out. Jazz heads and fans of Latin standards shouldn’t pass this one up.
