Lateef at Cranbrook (also reissued as Yusef Lateef) is a live album by multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef recorded in 1958 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and released on the Argo label.

A rare treasure from Yusef Lateef -- one of his hardest to find albums, recorded right around the same time as his magical work for Savoy! The record has Lateef playing in his local Detroit area -- working with Terry Pollard on piano, William Austin on bass, and Frank Gant on a host of percussion instruments. The tracks have that open, percussive, and exotic feel that we love the most in Lateef -- soul jazz taken to a very righteous territory, and one of the first powerful flowerings of the Detroit underground. Includes a really long version of "Morning", plus "Let Every Soul Say Amen", "Brazil", and "Woody N You" - Dusty Groove

Flutes Libres by Jean Cohen-Solal, released in 1972 on Daphny as part of their Musiques Et Instruments Insolites series.

"Jean Cohen-Solal studied flute from all angles, and became one of the great French virtuosi, along with Michel Edelin who at the time was with Triode. This was a period (1972) when flutists were very popular with the public, most of whom had been influenced by Roland Kirk, including Ian Anderson in Jethro Tull. Whereas Jean Cohen-Solal tells a different story, richer and centred on the instrument itself, using the magic (yes, that again) of overdubs.

Perhaps Paul Horn rather than Roland Kirk could be an influence, but stripped of a classical background which was too audible and a tendency for easy listening. In fact, in terms of comparison, "open music" by Bob Downes would be the closest to the electroacoustic experiments of Jean Cohen-Solal..."

It's Not Up to Us is the debut album by saxophonist/flautist Byard Lancaster released in 1968 on the Vortex label, an Atlantic subsidiary.

Pitchfork's Andy Beta stated "What strikes me first is the overall melodic sensibility of each of the players. Lancaster, on alto sax and flute, would go on to play with outsider luminaries like Sun Ra, Bill Dixon, and Fred Hopkins. Sharrock's violently strummed strings on Black Woman and Monkey-Pockie-Boo led to the vortices of Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and pretty much all future physical guitarists. Eric Gravatt would soon join an early version of Weather Report, yet everyone defers their skronkier, unrestrained abilities to the overall structure of each tune. This gives the Anglo folk base of some of Lancaster's compositions plenty room to be heard and hummed" - Wikipedia

The Intimate Miss Christy is a 1963 album by June Christy.

Review by Nick Dedina

On June Christy's excellent run of albums for Capitol Records the vocalist was most often backed by Pete Rugolo's complex orchestral charts or by small, freewheeling jazz groups led by her husband, Bob Cooper. So The Intimate Miss Christy is a special treat for her fans as it finds the cool blonde singer backed only by Al Viola's guitar and Don Bagley's bass (though a flutist sits in on a few tracks). This guitar/bass-only approach was first popularized by Julie London and went on to be utilized by many other singers during this era. The backing not only suits the laid-back, cool jazz approach of June Christy perfectly, but it also means that the singer is never forced to strain too hard, as she sometimes did when working with the experimentally inclined Pete Rugolo...

Every now and then, a review pops up I didn't know about. This time from Jazz Journal (UK) on Freshta:

"Lotz's deep-seated belief that the ideas of peace and freedom are too powerful to destroy proves to be a powerful creative spark, and despite the undeniable gravity of the subject matter, Freshta is ultimately an expression of hope, defiance and joy."

Up In The Air by Harold McNair released on Bahamian Rhythms Ltd.in 1964.

..Recorded in '64, yeah, but it don't sound old. Sounds like it was cooked yesterday in some backroom Nassau studio with rum on the floor and smoke in the air. McNair's flute? Man. He flips through these standards like he owns 'em. "Desafinado" - you heard it a thousand times. But this version? Slower. Slimy. Creeps in like midnight...Like concrete under dirt. Track list is all covers - "Fly Me To The Moon", "Witchcraft", "Stella By Starlight" - all that supper club nonsense. But McNair don't play polite. He twists 'em. Makes 'em dance with a limp. "Speak Low" swings like it's drunk but still trying to impress somebody... - Bandcamp Notes
