The Intimate Miss Christy is a 1963 album by June Christy.

Review by Nick Dedina

On June Christy's excellent run of albums for Capitol Records the vocalist was most often backed by Pete Rugolo's complex orchestral charts or by small, freewheeling jazz groups led by her husband, Bob Cooper. So The Intimate Miss Christy is a special treat for her fans as it finds the cool blonde singer backed only by Al Viola's guitar and Don Bagley's bass (though a flutist sits in on a few tracks). This guitar/bass-only approach was first popularized by Julie London and went on to be utilized by many other singers during this era. The backing not only suits the laid-back, cool jazz approach of June Christy perfectly, but it also means that the singer is never forced to strain too hard, as she sometimes did when working with the experimentally inclined Pete Rugolo...

Every now and then, a review pops up I didn't know about. This time from Jazz Journal (UK) on Freshta:

"Lotz's deep-seated belief that the ideas of peace and freedom are too powerful to destroy proves to be a powerful creative spark, and despite the undeniable gravity of the subject matter, Freshta is ultimately an expression of hope, defiance and joy."

Right Now is an album by American jazz flautist Herbie Mann recorded in 1962 for the Atlantic label

Allmusic awarded the album 3 stars stating "The flutist provided a very wide variety of music during his long stay at Atlantic; this rewarding 1962 LP found him combining bop with various forms of world music". -

[the title track] was popularized by jazz singer Mel Tormé on his album Comin' Home Baby!, and was the B-side of the single featuring the title track.

It was later covered in a variety of pop styles, including recordings by Siouxsie Sioux and her second band the Creatures, who scored a top 15 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1983 - Wikipedia

Up In The Air by Harold McNair released on Bahamian Rhythms Ltd.in 1964.

..Recorded in '64, yeah, but it don't sound old. Sounds like it was cooked yesterday in some backroom Nassau studio with rum on the floor and smoke in the air. McNair's flute? Man. He flips through these standards like he owns 'em. "Desafinado" - you heard it a thousand times. But this version? Slower. Slimy. Creeps in like midnight...Like concrete under dirt. Track list is all covers - "Fly Me To The Moon", "Witchcraft", "Stella By Starlight" - all that supper club nonsense. But McNair don't play polite. He twists 'em. Makes 'em dance with a limp. "Speak Low" swings like it's drunk but still trying to impress somebody... - Bandcamp Notes

Heartplants by Gunter Hampel Quintet, released on SABA in 1965.

Inconstant Sol wrote on their blog:

In any discussion of what marks the starting point of European free jazz, this record might be high up on the list. We have posted Francois Tusques' "Free Jazz" in the past which was out in 1965 in France, certainly a turning point in the evolution of French jazz. This combo is German, however, and these are studio recordings from 1964, originally out on the Saba label..

Whether this is "free" jazz as commonly understood, is debatable imho, most of it is fairly melodic...One epithet that might fit, to the extent that these terms carry any determinate meaning, is "structural" jazz and the pieces here certainly are well organised and thought out.

Conjunto Som 4 by Conjunto Som 4, released on 1964 on Continental

Fantastic work from a young Hermeto Pascoal! The group was his first, recording here in the mid 60s, a few years before he formed the Quarteto Novo with Airto. The overall style is bossa jazz, but the group adds a lot of odd twists and turns, and plenty of dark edges. Hermeto plays flute and piano, and the rest of the group includes bass, drums, and trumpet. A beautifully modernist batch of bossa -- with a sound that's a delight, and mellow grooves that will have you coming back again and again. Titles include "Nana", "Louco De Saudade", "Samba Novo", "Minha Namorada", "Deixa", and "Deus Brasileiro". - Dusty Groove

A Flat, G Flat and C is an album by American jazz multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, featuring performances recorded in 1966 for the Impulse! label.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow stated:

Yusef Lateef (heard on tenor, alto, flute, oboe and the mysterious-sounding theremin) is in explorative and consistently colorful form... Lateef performs ten songs (eight are his originals) that are all at least in abstract form related to the blues. Well worth several listens. - Wikipedia

Joy of Cookin' is an album by American jazz flautist Joe Thomas recorded in 1972 and released on the Groove Merchant label.

Allmusic's Jason Ankeny said: "While not reaching the same heights of Joe Thomas' previous Ebony Godfather LP, the aptly titled Joy of Cookin' boasts a comparable deep-fried funk flavor, fusing the style and sensibility of blaxploitation-era soundtracks with the formal ingenuity of jazz. Horace Ott's big, bold arrangements nicely complement Thomas' sweet, fluttery flute, which navigates in and out of the melodies with the grace of a monarch butterfly". - Wikipedia
