That $50 number isn't hypothetical. In 2025, a man allegedly used data broker sites to find lawmakers' home addresses. Two people became victims. A broker collecting 17 billion signals a day was hacked. Millions of locations leaked on a Russian forum. The FBI director confirmed they buy your location data without a warrant. Days later, his own email was breached. Nobody is safe in this system. Follow us and stay informed. #DataPrivacy #DigitalSovereignty #DataBrokers

While companies can manipulate you, they cannot put you in jail. But US government can, and it now purchases massive quantities of your information from commercial data brokers. The government is able to purchase Americans sensitive data because the information it buys is not subject to the same restrictions as information it collects directly.

To augment information about you that it collects directly, the US Government is buying less-regulated information harvested by cameras, cellphones and apps and sold on the commercial data market.

Your home blueprint is being sold to data brokers.

Smart vacuums use LiDAR to create millimeter-accurate 3D models of your living space. That floorplan? It could end up in a subpoena, a breach, or a broker's database.

If you've ever wondered: How can they know so much about me?

It's probably because of data brokers.

You know those "data enrichment partners" they are mentioning as vaguely as possible in the privacy policies you didn't read?

To learn more about data brokers, I highly recommend watching this excellent interview with @yaelwrites by @privacyguides :

TechCrunch: How the rewards app Freecash scammed its way to the top of the app stores. “The app has been marketed as a way to make money just by scrolling TikTok — and jumped to the top of the app stores in recent months, peaking at the No. 2 position in the U.S. App Store. In truth, Freecash pays users to play mobile games — all the while collecting a heaping amount of sensitive data, […]

@evan They do. But when the #DataBrokers and ad/message pushers have their own geofences, we see shitty influences (measles! Alberta separation! yay!) entering our communities as a result of interaction with their targets. We have a responsibility to protect each other, and to be sensible about the scale at which we can be effective.

It wasn't always like this. It has accelerated dramatically since #Harper's gutting of #Canadian content regs and the advent of social media targeting.
