Green Tea Greetings!

2010 Xiaguan Nan Zhao is another random raw puerh sample from Liquid Proust. Xiaguan is a classic puerh factory, well known for their "iron cakes" and similarly densely packed tuo (mushroom top shaped cakes). 2010 Nan Zhao is not that densely packed. Smokey character, complex flavor, bitterness creeping at the edges. If you're a sensitive type, not a tea to drink on an empty stomach. The internal leaves in the cake are very small, shards. Keeping steeps short. Tea drunk by noon.

2015 Wanggong Baohongyinji raw puerh is another random Sheng sample via Liquid Proust, probably from a raw puerh sampler box. BaoHongYinJi is a Taiwan based boutique puerh producer and this is a very balanced young/middle aged puerh. Very loosely compressed, you can tease it apart without a pick. Beautiful leaves. Complex flavor, pleasant returning sweetness, long lingering aftertaste.

There are advantages to compulsively including additional bags of tea you enjoy in orders. For example while everyone else complained to White2Tea about them not making Daily Jinjunmei black tea last year, I could quietly drink down my 4 bags (and distribute some to friends)...

A single 7g sample of this "ANZAC" 2024 Huangpian blend from White2Tea. Probably included in another order. Softer flavor, some astringency in later steeps. Lingering tongue tingles and pleasant aftertaste. (Left out on the table, knocked off by cat, someone apparently thought it was some sort of chew toy. Didn't seem to affect the flavor.)

This 2005 Yang Qing Hao Yiwu Huang Pian is definitely on the forest floor and autumn leaf puddle side of tea flavor. It is a bit astringent/drying in the middle and later steeps. Nice aftertaste and great energy, tho. I must have gotten it in a sampler I ordered from Andrew at Liquid Proust.

2021 Spring Laos Green from One River Tea. This was a green tea when I got it, now the leaves have faded to brown. A bit like aged raw Liu Bao, farmer tea. Sweet, with a touch of smoke.

It's taken a few weeks, but I've finished off my Xizihao Daughter raw puerh samples. Ending on my favorite of the bunch, 2017 Spreading Joy. Not sure what's next, maybe just green teas.

It's after easter, time to move on to green teas! Book Cover Green (2023) is a blend of "less picturesque leaves" from a Sichuan producer that White2Tea sources other single variety green teas from. Basically green tea Huang Pian.

Wenshan Baozhong is a very low oxidation oolong. This "Competition Grade" sample came from the (Taiwan based) Eco-Cha tea club in 2020 or 2021. It drinks like an extra floral green tea. Oddly, even though it is low oxidation and little to no roast, you sometimes see aged versions of Wenshan Baozhong.

@ellestad @tea did you just now open it? Otherwise how has it held up after 3 or 4 years?

I've just subscribed to the eco-cha club as a result of the China tariff situation. I don't know much about Taiwanese tea, and I'm excited to get a curated introduction.

@parslii Yeah, I try to keep green and oolong teas sealed unless I'm gonna drink them. Store them in our cool basement, sealed. I thought it was really good. I think I've seen aged Wenshan Baozhong from the 1980s. A friend said they'd tried one that was said to be 100 years old. @tea
@parslii I thought the Eco-Cha tea club was great, great value, great tea. The main "problem" with it is too much tea. I'm still drinking through samples from it 4 years later. @tea
@ellestad @tea yeah I actually was anticipating the "too much tea" problem, and that's why I responded to your post. I don't know what will "too much tea" look like when I finish the last of my bings, though.
I recently tried several aged Baozhongs, from 1963, 1972, 1976 and 1987. Two of them were exceptionally good, complex, deep, almost like liqueur, but with a completely different flavor profile than the fresh ones. Very interesting indeed!
