in honor of Studio Gainax (creator of Evangelion, FLCL, many others) finally shuttering last month, these are the Daicon shorts they made for fan conventions in 1981 and 1983 as college students

if you've never seen them, it's a pretty important piece of anime/nerd history as well as being a sign of nerd culture in the 1980s. yes, fan conventions would make music videos for fun, and use all kinds of copyrighted stuff without permission

the first 90 seconds of the video from 1981 is rough; the second longer video from 1983, you can see why they went on to become professionals. and, of course, ELO!

It's awesome because the audience reacts differently that today's people, since they get all the references. We can also see that the film was actually unfinished, some shots are missing (replaced with placeholders) and the end title animation is incomplete.
