Fun Plzeň fact:
The building next to today’s McDonald’s once housed the Communist Party — complete with a massive red star on the roof. After ’89 they didn’t remove it, just flopped it down so no one could see it.
I spotted it on the roof in 2015.

The mistaken attribution to Durer of an illustration showing the burning of Jan Hus on this web page https://www.byteseu.com/1168650/

brought me to this fascinating discussion of the illustrations of the Jena Codex.

As I looked at the pictures, I realized that I have hardly ever seen any Hussite art. These Jena Codex illustrations are amongst the rare examples to survive, because the codex was taken to Germany in the second half of the 16th century and thereby escaped the destruction of Hussite imagery that accompanied the recatholicization of Bohemia.

🇭🇺 Hungary
The 1945 election was truly free—communists won only 17 %. Mátyás Rákosi’s “salami tactics” (arrests, show trials, forced party mergers) sliced rivals away; by 1949 just one party remained. #Hungary #History

🇨🇿🇸🇰 Czechoslovakia
Communists took 38 % in the fair 1946 poll. When non-communist ministers resigned, armed “people’s militias” backed a February 1948 coup; all other parties were purged. #CzechHistory #ColdWar
