Sonic and Zelda celebrating Sonic's birthday a bit early.

I bought this Zelda figure and she was just the perfect size for Sonic! (I held her up against a Sonic figure in the store to check and lo and behold there was a perfect height difference!  It's as though they were made for each other

I'd read quite a few SSB fanfics and watched matches posted to YouTube. But I've been itching to experience the game itself. Plus I'm running out of Sonic/Zelda matches

I checked my library's catalog out of curiosity. And they actually had a copy of Super Smash Bros Ultimate! Long live public libraries!

I've already unlocked Zelda! I can't wait to unlock Sonic so he can smash her!

Self-indulgent Sonic/Zelda sketch based on that fanfic I read and recced earlier this week.

I first discovered the ship by reading a very cracky, very NSFW SonZelda fic when I was looking for fics that had both Sonic and Elise tagged (OG gamer girlfriend I ship him with. I know there are 40 fics under the tag, but most of them are fluff or angst, and I wanted a change).

But after reading that I got curious about the ship, read an absolute banger of a fanfic...the only other SonZelda fic on AO3...now I'm scraping the barrel on FF.net and filtering for Smash Bros fics on AO3 tagged with both Sonic and Zelda with the hopes that they briefly acknowledge each others' existence. Help?!)

This rec is specifically for the first chapter of this fic! I can't speak much to my thoughts on Zelda's characterization, as I'm rather rusty on LoZ, but Sonic felt so in character here!

The fic starts with him sitting on a rooftop watching the sunrise as he listens to the radio (Referencing his penchant for chilling on rooftops in Sonic X!). Zelda somehow knows to find him up there, and he chats with her while trying not to be too obvious about his crush on her, even as she seems more aware of it than he hoped...

The fic gives a nice, atmospheric overview of the setting and the basic premise of Smash in the beginning, so it can also be read fandom-blind. The author even included the name of the jazz song Sonic and Zelda are listening to! (I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the genre prior)

A lot of fans see Sonic as a hyperactive character who is very flirty with his love interests. While I can see that in spin-off media like the films or Western shows, that’s not how he acts in the games. Besides, I find it so much more interesting when a normally confident character has difficulty showing their messier feelings, and this fic really nailed that side of Sonic.

I was bracing myself for him to be aggressively forward towards Zelda, but I loved his shyness even as he tried to put up a casual front around her. I highly recommend this if you also like this interpretation of Sonic!

Note: I only read up to the Sonic x Zelda portion in the first chapter, but there's another section in the first chapter featuring Lucina/Palutena as a pairing. Though the Sonzelda portion felt self-contained, and the ending was satisfying on its own!
