A reasonable alternative to a top-down policy, we believe, is to enable #criticalAIliteracies to develop from the bottom up. Allow faculty to make choices that comport w/ the learning objectives for their course. Educate students to empower them and enable good decision-making+

Today, @UW sent out a survey asking community members to share our thoughts about the recommendations of the University's AI task force. It's a push-poll, that doesn't even define "AI", and the recommendations are appaling. In that light, reupping this: https://t.co/TgMSqnDNHL

I would need more info to comment here.

My #criticalAIliteracies approach is oriented around harms and these are so significant that I've yet to find actual "pros" that require the use of something like ChatGPT. Coding asst may be the best use case but the coders I know vary.

For the case that students today need #criticalAIliteracies see Goodlad and Conrad in this collection of essays featuring work by Jeremy Knox and @BenPatrickWill & others. /11

Note how Witherspoon’s language mirrors exactly the sort that’s been posted by blue check AI boosters for months. It’s become a mantra that’s exceptionally useful to AI companies and influencers—pay for AI services, read the newsletters, or lose your job! AI generated FOMO

/2 Adding in interest of full disclosure that I'm particularly interested in education: the perception that AI will "revolutionize" business fuels the perception that educators MUST adopt commercial bots in their classrooms ASAP.
Though I support teaching #CriticalAIliteracies ...

(Read Allison & Tiffany Derewal's forthcoming CAI paper on the PITFALLS OF CHATBOT "RESEARCH" which is developed from their excellent talk at our #CRITICALAILITERACIES event which you can listen to. https://sites.rutgers.edu/critical-ai/event-details/. )

Do not be fooled by #AIHype, do not believe that you must "teach with" chatbots b/c of phony FOMO; don't teach w/ any technology that you don't yet understand yourself. (If you need more information, here's a living document that might help you.)
