If you measure a museum by its stairways, well, The Courtauld Gallery in central London would be near the top of the list in my book. It's near the top of my list for its collection, too, but this photograph of the stairwell caught my eye this morning as I looked back on our recent visit.

I had no idea that the model for the famous painting by Modigliani at the Courtauld Gallery (of the naked young woman with her face against her shoulder) was Iris Tree, the daughter of the great Victorian actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree.

And I didn't know she was also a poet.
