Chrysomela scripta, the cottonwood leaf beetle. They like all the root suckers that grow up in the pasture. Must be something about the new leaves on the new growth. They're not a problem because these all get cut off eventually so they can eat as much as they want.

A colorful grove of mixed trees in the high desert below the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada.

As the Eastern Sierra aspen color season progressed during October, the colors (to speak generally) work their way down from the highest groves to trees in the high desert, where they may appear alongside cottonwood trees, which themselves produce color even later in the season. On this morning I had finished photographing my sunrise location, but I didn’t want to stop just yet. So I decided to stretch the photography time as far into the later morning hours as possible and to do a bit of exploring at the same time. What’s Up With All The White Fluff? Why Cottonwood Trees Are Seeding Like Crazy This Year

These types of trees expel their seeds en masse every few years, and it usually only lasts a few weeks. The seed blizzard is more noticeable this year because there's been so little rain, an expert said.

Scale. A few years back. A large parcel (2 square hectares) of cottonwood poplar were ‘harvested’. The were planted to provide pallet wood. Whilst some trees (dark centres) are near the natural end of of the lifespan, many weren’t. I was employed by the small group that did this. I had no idea that this was deliberate. I was gobsmacked, angry. And it was one of the contributing reasons to resigning from forestry. 60yo crop. #Peupliers #Cottonwoods
