I am very interested in reading "Beyond the Hype: Inside Science’s Biggest Media Scandals From Climategate to Covid" by Fiona Fox.

I was in school, studying environmental science, when this began, and lost track of the scandal after I graduated and found myself unable to find a steady job for several years. The "Climategate" scandal, in a nutshell, was people stealing lots of emails from climate scientists and then selectively releasing them to the media to paint climate scientists as frauds. But it's complicated and consequential enough to warrant a book--especially since this model of media manipulation by bad actors on the right (but I repeat myself) has only grown since then.

There's basic irony in play here, given that recent divergence of tree growth from what's been typical for millennia seems to be our fault, while #ClimateScienceDeniers were going into a positive lather over a juicy pull-quote from stolen emails.

Sound and fury signifying nothing and called #Climategate erupted 15 years ago, back when coastal flooding was less of a nuisance, alpine glaciers were larger and old temperature records still held.

If we had perfect instrumentation we could probably measure Climategate's success in making things a bit worse today. Procrastination was always Climategate's destination-- and here we are, warmer than need be.

When this happened, being 12 yrs stupider, I wasted a lot of time going through the emails (even data attachments) arguing with a Facebook friend about what they really meant. She obvs didn’t change her mind, but I learnt a lot about how this stuff works, how giving people more data can make things worse, which I feel prepared me well for this current era, and even some crazier stuff like #PizzaGate
