‘We were heard’: the Pacific students who took their climate fight to the ICJ – and won - #Environment | The Guardian (Sera Sefeti in the Hague)

A group of Pacific students succeeded in bringing a case before the International Court of Justice (#ICJ), resulting in a ruling that states are legally obligated to protect the environment and climate from harm such as greenhouse gas emissions. If states fail to meet these duties, they can be held accountable. Initiated by #Vanuatu and the Pacific youth movement, the decision is seen as a milestone for international climate justice and strengthens the rights of affected communities.
