Brotherhood by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath, released on RCA in 1972

Fifty years ago Pete Gamble thought the Brotherhood's second album got closer to the impossibility of reproducing the effect of the live band. First published in Jazz Journal July 1972

While I don’t think that the true essence of the Brotherhood will ever be captured on disc, this their second album goes a long way toward reproducing the live article. The fact that Chris produced this one himself is almost certainly the reason why.

Side I shows the two sides of the band. Nick Tete, composed by Dudu Pukwana, has a simple repetitive theme, a wailing typical solo from Mr. P., and some excellent drumming from Moholo in the driving seat...

Very Urgent is an album by the Chris McGregor Group, led by pianist McGregor, and featuring saxophonists Ronnie Beer and Dudu Pukwana, trumpeter Mongezi Feza, bassist Johnny Dyani, and drummer Louis Moholo. It was recorded at Sound Techniques in London, and was released on LP by Polydor Records in 1968.

In a review for The Guardian, John Fordham wrote: "In its unrelenting collective intensity, this set might surprise a few John Zorn admirers in being this far out, this far back... This was a world-class free-band, and it's great to have the evidence back." - Wikipedia

Chris McGregor's Jazz – The African Sound
...A cornerstone of South Africa's illustrious jazz history, it has been out of print since before the end of apartheid...

Ten years before the Brotherhood of Breath...Chris McGregor had already recorded as leader with a big band comprised of South Africa's leading jazz lights...the Castle Lager Big Band was a multi-racial group, a risky endeavour in apartheid South Africa. Modernist in outlook, and dedicated to showcasing South African composers, the 17-piece band featured a galaxy of South African jazz stars, including Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, and Kippie Moeketsi.

Though the band lasted only a few weeks and played a just a handful of shows, they made it into the studio to record. The result was Jazz – The African Sound, a unique masterpiece of afro-Ellingtonia that the band hoped would put South African jazz on the international map.... - Jazzman Records

It was recorded at Sound Techniques in London, and was released on LP by Polydor Records in 1968. In 2008, the album was reissued on CD by Fledg'ling Records. With the exception of Beer, all of the musicians were members of The Blue Notes, and the album can be viewed as the group's debut studio recording.
