Live In Berlin 1971 by Weather Report, released by GAD Records in 2023.

The recording was produced as part of a series of jazz workshops organized by NDR radio in Hamburg. The workshops brought together the most prominent creators in the European jazz circle and beyond. Weather Report's participation in this extraordinary endeavor, overseen by Michael Naura, was a major attraction of the "Berlin Radio Show." The musicians not only prepared a short performance for television but also played a full-length concert at the Haus des Rundfunks in West Berlin and it is this recording of September 3, 1971, that fills the two discs of Live in Berlin 1971.

With Special Guests
Eje Thelin: Trombone
Alan Skidmore: Flute, Tenor & Soprano Saxophones
John Surman: Soprano & Baritone Saxophone, Clarinet

Brotherhood by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath, released on RCA in 1972

Fifty years ago Pete Gamble thought the Brotherhood's second album got closer to the impossibility of reproducing the effect of the live band. First published in Jazz Journal July 1972

While I don’t think that the true essence of the Brotherhood will ever be captured on disc, this their second album goes a long way toward reproducing the live article. The fact that Chris produced this one himself is almost certainly the reason why.

Side I shows the two sides of the band. Nick Tete, composed by Dudu Pukwana, has a simple repetitive theme, a wailing typical solo from Mr. P., and some excellent drumming from Moholo in the driving seat...

GG-CJB by The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , released on MPS in 1979.

One of Europe’s most venerated band leaders, Swiss pianist-composer George Gruntz fronted small and large groups stacked with international jazz greats. This live GGCGB date is a dazzling example. All are internationally renowned jazz masters, many, such as long-time Mingus trombonist Jimmy Knepper, were innovators on their instruments; some, such as Americans drummer Elvin Jones, guitarist John Scofield, and trumpeter Woody Shaw are jazz legends. The compositions highlight Gruntz’s arranging skills and allow for a lot of open blowing. Destiny opens up with a propulsive Elvin Jones drum solo, followed by Scofield’s compelling play and Swiss musician Franco Ambrozetti’s luscious, warm flugelhorn..

El Skid by Elton Dean, Alan Skidmore, Chris Laurence, John Marshall, released on Vinyl Records in 1977

...a 1977 session with saxophonist Alan Skidmore (of Kate Bush fame), acoustic bassist Chris Laurence, and once-Soft Machine alumni drummer John Marshall. This quartet feels like a shared Dean/Skidmore project (something enhanced by the album title). The saxophonists share writing credits equally and take the same room in term of solo space. "Dr. Les Mosses" kicks things into gear with a hot fusion number the likes of Soft Machine circa 4: challenging yet frantically swinging. Skidmore tears open his tenor sax in this one. "First in the Attic" and "Thats for Cha," the two numbers penned by Dean, boil things down to something quieter, leaving room for Laurence to shine...- Jazz and Blues Club

S. O. S. by S. O. S., released on Ogun in 1975

Marcello Carlin wrote on

This was a major, and controversial, event at its time. These were perhaps the three foremost saxophonists on the British jazz scene; they were all world-class players and at least one of them was acknowledged as the greatest living exponent of his principal instrument...

...the album's highlight, and one of my favourite tracks recorded by anyone on Ogun, "Goliath," featuring a wholly-liberated Osborne blowing ecstatically over Surman's cathedral of synthesisers (and electric piano?) and Skidmore's punk rock drums. It reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator or the Dean/Ratledge/Hopper/Wyatt Soft Machine at their most fervent. Towards track's end, Surman's keyboards begin to ascend into the heavens, and there is a holy poignancy...

I'll being continuing some work on Tubby this week, perhaps looking at his Fontana release, 'Tubbs' -- but also keen to improve Alan Skidmore's article. Help me out folks! 🙂 #jazz #wikipedia #TubbyHayes #AlanSkidmore
