Retrospectief
Met zijn empathische, maar vooral eerlijke documentaire blik wordt Chris Killip (VK, 1946 – 2020) gezien als een van de meest invloedrijke naoorlogse Britse fotografen. In de jaren 1970 en 1980 trok hij keer op keer met zijn camera naar Noord-Engeland. Een roerige periode voor deze regio, waarin de ene na de andere grote fabriek zijn deuren sloot. Grote werkeloosheid en armoede waren het gevolg. Killip wist als geen ander de impact van de economische teloorgang vast te leggen en richtte zijn camera en zijn hart op de working class, de mensen die het hardst werden getroffen door de economische aardverschuiving.

“I wanted to record people's lives because I valued them. I wanted them to be remembered.
If you take a photograph of someone they are immortalized, they're there forever.
For me that was important, that you're acknowledging people's lives, and also contextualizing people's lives.”
