Looking from Beanley Moor over the the estate of an influential Northumbrian, Ted Wrangham, to the Cheviots (Harehope) Ted's main achievements were having the vision for Kielder Water to secure water supplies and provide recreation and, more importantly, translating "Selected Climbs In The Dauphine And Vercors." for the Alpine Club. I climbed with him once, he nicked one of my karabiners. #Landscape #Northumberland #AlpineClub #Cheviots
As we head for midwinter here's a reminder of summer evenings out in Northumberland, at Ravensheugh Crag in the Simonside Hills, looking westward into the sunset up Coquetdale and the Cheviot Hills.

Recently Hill Wood Pasture has been identified as an important historic farmed habitat. In the Cheviots there would have been Juniper on the higher ground, then Ash/Birch lower down and finally Alder in the valley floor. Here's one of the few surviving Northumbrian examples, some Juniper on the hill and Alder in the valley floor. Cattle would've grazed the pasture around these trees, protected from the worst of the weather.

23km walk today from Hethpool up the border rigg to The Curr, then back along lovely College Valley.

I passed the site of three plane crashes from World War 2 - there's 19 in total in this part of the hills.

Wideopen Hill, #Cheviots today. A bit wet at time but a good day out. Very good descent on the bike. Because of the #StCuthbertsWay we met other people, unusual in the Scottish bit of the range.
