A chess club for kids thrives in a Congo refugee camp. It’s about more than the game
In the midst of one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, a chess club for kids is thriving in a refugee camp in eastern Congo. The Soga Chess Club doesn't have enough tables and chairs. The “boards” are squares of paper with green and white blocks marked on them. They are lined with plastic to protect them from the wear and tear coming their way. The children lay their games out on the ground. But the chess club founders say it's good enough to try and take the children’s minds away from what they’ve seen and experienced so far: fighting and killing, hunger and fear, in a region devastated by conflict.
