Meta and Google just lost a landmark social media addiction case. A tech law expert explains the fallout

The case was the first of its kind. But it won’t be the last.

all criticisms of this insane "age verification" shitfuckery are absolutely justified, given its trojan horse transparency for the use of techbros & rwnj govts. articles pointing this out are not my beef. my repeat whinges in this space are the general tone of all such articles i've seen & critiqued lately is simply that all cesspit media IS all social media, everything is algorithmic & centralised, there is no escape. all fediversers know this is a lie, & its constant promulgation drives me nuts. directly related to this, specifically for kids themselves, is the plaintive journalistic voice that marginalised kids once banned from "s/m" [actually c/m], will ipso facto have no vehicle to find their tribes. i would agree that would be evil... except... again... the fediverse exists!

smaller and Indie platforms

yep i noticed that, & agree it's prolly secret code for fediverse, but... making it so subtle as to be unintelligible to cesspit-media victims who think they have no options, is silly stupid.

sorry for grumpy tone. tis just... waves broadly at everything...

not a single mention of the #fediverse, in an article ostensibly about #socialmedia, which instead bangs on merely about #cesspitmedia. another useless journo, ffs.

Given the toxicity of social media, a moral question now faces all of us: is it still ethical to use it?

With so many platforms rife with racism, misogyny and far-right rhetoric, there must be a point where decent people walk away, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

The Guardian

journo spends entire essay whingeing about the ai-enshitification of social media, without once addressing actual social media, talking only about cesspit media

we are surrounded & overrun by abject pig-ignorance

How to spot AI-generated social media that acts like a 'snake eating its own tail'

The age of AI is here and it's going to be infinitely useful, or so they tell us, unless you're the kind of person who, like me, finds computer-generated stories infinitely boring and an insult to humanity.

@feather1952 i've now read the article, & have mixed feelings. i can see their point ofc about there being so much shit, but the constant statements of it now being inescapable, & obligatory etc, run thin with me. gonna be a bit controversial, & maybe rude...

IMO those negative statements are only true for lazy unmotivated peeps who don't lift a finger to seek their best digital interests. i'm a very lazy peep in many aspects, but not at all digitally, where i always have been proactive. i never used amazon, coz i saw immediately that it was a corrupt business model predicated on treating employees as slaves, & vendors as serfs. so, no escape needed now by me, coz i always avoided it.

similar with all the cesspit media; deliberately never tangled with them as saw them as either shit at once, or that they would inevitably become shit due to human venality, so no escape needed now.

if peeps that moan about being trapped in the cesspits, don't bother proactively helping themselves by coming to the fediverse instead, then it's hard for me to feel much sorrow for them. yes ofc the world would be better without all this shit, but that's just not real, whereas peeps can help themselves, if they can be bothered.

last night i finished Annabel Crabb's latest political doco thingy, by watching eps 2 & 3, & though ep 1 was better, still enjoyed them. one thing really struck me though; she & various interlocutors repeatedly alluded to, or spoke directly of, "the algorithms" having totes destroyed, & still be doing so, any practical concept of "The News". i felt too despondent even to begin hurling cushions at the screen whilst screaming out "use the fucken fediverse you fools".

Utterly facile convo without either bothering to put on record the plain fact that such platforms & users & content are just puerile & pathetic.

Early in pod, brief soundbite of some prepubescent user saying "
it's every kid's dream to become successful online".

Send the bloody meteor now!
