Two student journalists, Georgia Dillane and Celeste Gamble, were targeted by Barnard College after reporting on a pro-Palestine protest. Despite not being present at the protest, Dillane was accused of violating the student code of conduct and threatened with disciplinary action, including being barred from graduation. After a legal battle and public scrutiny, Barnard acknowledged its mistake and dropped the charges against Dillane, though Gamble’s status remains uncertain.
In February 2025, Barnard College was in the news for expelling two students following their disruption of a "History of Modern Israel" class at Columbia University. In April 2024, Barnard suspended and evicted at least 55 students for their alleged participation in the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment.” Following the suspensions, Barnard offered an “Alternative Resolution” process which lifted the suspensions in exchange for waiving rights to participate in the conduct process. Columbia University Apartheid Divest (#CUAD) launched a campaign calling for the reinstatement of the expelled students, generating over 12,000 letters to Barnard administrators.
Ironically, political participation is considered "a historical hallmark of the Barnard population," with students actively engaged in voter mobilization, political information sharing, and organizations such as Barnard Votes and Columbia Democrats. https://standarchives.com/barnard-college
