Here is a video comparing SSB and FM transmission with and without audio companding. Audio compression actually lowers the SSB single tone output power by about 6-7 dB, but the compressed audio seems more readable across a wider audio range.

Compressor adjustment methodology: a test audio file with normalized audio to -1.0f - 1.0f interval (highest peak at 1.0f), played on a virtual Pulseaudio sink with the play command.
