Weird Al Yankovic, Dare To Be Stupid, 1985 on Scotti Bros.

This was the third studio LP from Weird Al, produced by Rick Derringer. Mixture of paradoes and “style parodies” which don’t copy specific songs but a generalized look and feel – like “Dare to be Stupid” which is in the style of Devo.

Apparently he approached Prince about doing a parody of “When Doves Cry” but Prince refused. (Yankovic could do these without permission but prefers to only do them with the participation of the originating artist). I do wish Prince had consented.

My copy, via Beatnick Records in Montréal Québec, is a Canadian pressing (Don Mills Ontario plant) manufactured and distributed by CBS Records Canada Ltd / CBS Disques Canada Ltée.

Rockpile, Seconds of Pleasure, 1980 on Columbia

This is Rockpile’s one and only studio album released under their name in 1980. The band includes Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams – though other material from Rockpile’s repertoire would come out under the name of Dave Edmunds or Nick Lowe solo albums.

The whole constellation of Nick Lowe / Dave Edmunds / Elvis Costello / Brinsley Schwarz created some really amazing music – pub rock is the label sometimes attached but that can be a bit limiting.

My copy—via La Fin Du Vinyle in Montréal Québec— is a Canadian pressing (Manufactured by CBS Records Canada Ltd).

Bruce Cockburn, Waiting for a Miracle: Singles 1970-1987, 1987 on True North

Collection of singles from Canada’s Bruce Cockburn, whose career ranged widely from folk to what we might call world music to rock. Cockburn was a Berklee School of Music dropout before being a dropout from Berkelee was de rigeur.

I first found Cockburn via “If I Had A Rocket Launcher” and his association with various activist musicians in the 80s. He also worked with T-Bone Burnett on a few albums in the 80s.

True North is an independent Canadian label (founded by Bernie Finkelstein) with distribution by CBS and they still put out Bruce Cockburn’s music.

My copy—via VInyl Destination in Lowell, MA—is a Canadian pressing by CBS Records Canada from the Don Mills Ontario plant.
