Huge news! Together, we saved Market Match!
Just a few days ago, Gov. Newsom signed the 2024-25 #CABudget into law, with all proposed cuts to the California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP) removed! This funding will secure the future of the #MarketMatch program!
Will you take a moment to help express our gratitude for preserving funding for CNIP in this difficult budget year? https://www.nextgenpolicy.org/thank-legislators-for-saving-the-california-nutrition-incentive-program-cnip/
We need your help! Join us tomorrow from 12:30 - 1:30 on the west steps of the Capitol and rally to #SaveMarketMatch!
Find details and RSVP at https://savemarketmatch.org/rally (you are welcome to show up, even if you forget to RSVP!)
This program is an essential safety net for hungry families and California's small farms, and we are fighting its extinction. If you can't make it tomorrow, please take a few minutes for other action steps: https://savemarketmatch.org/act
Crabs, crabs, crabs! At the California Institute for Biodiversity, we STRONGLY support #CoastalResilience #CABudget funds to protect the intertidal zone habitat of these clawed coastal critters and the countless species that call the California coastline home.
This beautiful, strange, fascinating, cute creature is a Hopkin's rose nudibranch, aka sea slug! It's part of CA's amazing #IntertidalBiodiversity we must preserve, protect, and record with a DNA barcode library database.
We're excited that the CA Senate has a plan to prioritize #CoastalResilience funds, which will help protect the habitats of our favorite nudibranches (and countless other species). We urge the Assembly to adopt the same plan!
It's no surprise to us that California is number 1 state for #biodiversity. We've spent this #EarthWeek in Sacramento for #PowerInNature -- rallying for #IntertidalBiodiversity and #CoastalResilience funds to protect and preserve our thousands of native species!
Today is #OceanDayCA - we're headed to Sacramento along with hundreds of other ocean advocates to urge lawmakers to protect #CoastalResilience funds in the state budget.
We're also making a special ask to extend California's DNA barcode libraries to life in the intertidal zone. We already have such libraries for pollinators, insects, fungi and soil - this is the next step.

We've got numbers for all of you who enjoy tracking data! In Jan/Feb 2023, we have distributed $135,913 in CalFresh and #MarketMatch (MM) at 6 local farmers' markets across 5,475 transactions!
You may note that the total dollar amount is a slight decrease from the same period in 2022. We can trace this to two root causes:
1. Until April '22, MM incentives were $15/customer. Since then, they have been $10/customer. This means fewer incentive dollars are available to spend in '23.
2. The weather was dramatically different between 2022 and 2023. This year, markets saw constant storms that sometimes resulted in early closures or even cancellations, which are normally very rare. The storms also impact the timing and availability of California-grown produce.

Thank you to Asm. Isaac Bryan and Sen. Angelique Ashby for making funding for #LEAFSB907 a budget priority! SB907 was signed into law last year but it remains to be funded for implementation and these champions will help bring high-quality #CalFresh / EBT access to every California certified farmers' market! Thank you for working on behalf of food-insecure Californians and California's small farms to create Local Equitable Access to Food!
