Vengono a scuola senza alcuna protezione.

Ebola emergency in the DR Congo, the shocking report: 83% of schools lack suits and hygiene...

ActionAid - The ActionAid organization conducted an assessment in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, revealing that 83% of schools do not have handwashing stations or specific Ebola hygiene facilities, while 81% do not have active response or isolation protocols and 78% lack personal protective equipment for teachers and students.

Furthermore, 74% of teachers had not received any Ebola training and 67% of schools had not received any visits from health authorities in relation to the epidemic. A very concerning figure, 29% of schools had already registered at least one suspected case of Ebola or a close contact.

“What we have seen in the 12 communities of the Nyankunde, Nizi and Bunia health zones is a desperate situation, characterized by low levels of knowledge of the disease, lack of protective infrastructure and serious disruptions of services in health centers and schools,” stated Saani Yakubu, Country Director of ActionAid in the Rd Congo.

Parents’ Fears
Panza, a member of the school parent committee in Nyankunde, emphasized the growing fear among staff and parents. “Our teachers are afraid. They come to school without any protection. If a child arrives sick, we don’t know what to do. We ask for help to understand how to behave, as well as the necessary tools to protect our children.”

The assessment also highlighted increased vulnerability for women and girls in areas already struggling with displacement caused by armed conflict. 82% of women interviewed by ActionAid stated they primarily take care of sick family members, exposing themselves disproportionately to the risk of infection. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that they do not have protective equipment or adequate training on patient management.

ActionAid, which has been operating in Ituri since 2022, implementing emergency education programs, gender-based violence prevention and food security, is calling on the international community and local authorities to immediately allocate resources to support the emergency response.
