Her grandma saved her from the Russians, then chose to say goodbye

The 9-year-old Ukrainian girl had been separated from her mother for more than three years, and now the two have to get to know each other all over again.

In June 2025, #Save_Ukraine helped evacuate them to #Ukrainian-controlled territory. At first, #Solomiia did not recognize her mom, but then she hugged her tightly.

"The girl I remember before the war and the one I see now - well, they feel like two different people. Before the war, she was a happy, curious, active child. Now she’s more guarded. #Solomiia can’t explain her wishes and desires. I’m learning from my mom how to understand my daughter," #Marichka shared.

Nine-year-old #Solomiia finally hugged her mom, #Marichka, for the first time in three years. She had last seen #Marichka in January 2022. #Solomiia spent over three years living under #Russian occupation in southern #Ukraine with her grandma, whom she calls #Bunia.

#Solomiia's grandma hid her from #Russian soldiers to prevent her deportation. She even obtained a #Russian passport and spoke #Russian. But at home, #Bunia secretly taught her granddaughter #Ukrainian.
