@mstrlaw any #bryophyte #bryophyta people who might like to comment? The water droplets, tho beautiful, baffle image recognition apps. The unusually long setae dont have capsules that look much different: I may even be imagining them pointing up and as thin as the seta.

Old air samples hint at effects of climate change

Lund University. When the Swedish military began collecting air samples in the 1960s to register radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons testing, it is highly unlikely that anyone was thinking about moss. However, the glass fibre filters on which the samples were saved also captured something completely unintended – namely DNA from pollen, spores and other biological particles. This discovery was made by researcher Per Stenberg of Umeå University.

Mosses (Bryophyta) have been around for around 500 million years, its thought dinosaurs encountered and ate them incidentally while browsing. Since moss lack internal "plumbing" (xylem and phloem). Polytrichastrum alpinum, or alpine haircap moss, is a pretty little moss I commonly find in certain forested areas in the lower mainland of BC.
