20/04/2025 - A Sunday morning stroll to the bottle bank again (I eat a lot of jam and those jars keep building up).
It's that time of year again when one of my favourite small things start to show, Common Liverwort. It just looks like it's from a different planet.
Two close up photos - Reproductive structures known as gametophores. Male gametophores on left, female gametophores right
Crescent-cup Liverwort (Lunularia cruciata) reproduces asexually with tiny, disc-shaped gemmae. These develop in moon-shaped cups on the plant’s surface and disperse when raindrops hit, splashing them out of their cups.
Thousands of #trees planted in #Devon to start creation of Celtic rainforest

"They used to cover large parts of #Britain... The mature temperate #rainforest will take several decades to become established, but the gains for nature will be much swifter... #TemperateRainforests support an abundance of #wildlife including #birds while their damp conditions mean #mosses, #liverworts, #lichens, #ferns and #fungi thrive on the trees as well as the forest floor."
