At last we have the actual cost to the public of implementing the next stage of Brexit.
Many of us knew this was coming, although it's been delayed more than once. Any Minster/brexiteer who listened to civil servants or other experts knew this before the vote.

Looking forward to updating my subnational #BrexitCost numbers. They were first published 3 years ago as exclusive in the Financial Times.

At the time, #Brexit was still not a political reality - three years on subnational GVA data is available up to 2020 at local authority level & up to 2022 Q3 at regional level.

I hope to do this by summer. It will be interesting. We will be contrasting two treatments: the Brexit vote & actual Brexit.

How did things look up to 2020?

Fact 2: The Turkey's did vote for Christmas.

For every 10 p.p. higher support for Leave in 2016, the #Brexit induced GDP loss is 2 percentage points higher.

In addition, the districts and areas with highest #BrexitCost #BrexitReality
- have a larger manufacturing- and agricultural sector
- had more migrants from EU accession countries
- have less educated resident population

The places that voted Leave the most are hit the hardest. Yes, the turkey's did vote for Christmas.

@sloughforeu our Conservative government of the last 12 years has so much to answer for! #BrexitCost

I think I should soon try to update https://www.brexitcost.org -- if only I had more time and was not held back by shortsightedness around me so much more could be done.

#Research is more important than ever to document how poor political stewardship of our #economy & #society is not serving people. Brexit is the most important case in point.

It was sold as everything for anybody - its magical thinking crashes hard against realities.

A lie never lives to be old!
