I suspect there's more at play behind the rampant both-siderism in the US than just average Democrat-leaning voter concluding that D's and R's are equally bad.

It wouldn't surprise me if Russia or China (or both) are using their disinformation apparatus to target American liberals as a way to peel off Democrat voters. I.e., get them to vote third party, or not vote at all, because "both parties are just as bad."
