At the risk of sounding like a princess... this is a solid 25% of my rationale for not pursuing EMS. There are three shifts you can pick with Boston EMS: Morning, which starts at 06:00/07:00 and runs until 15:00/16:00 (assuming everyone is nice enough to not get hurt or sick right before shift change) evening which starts at 15:00/16:00 and runs until 23:00/24:00, and night, which is 23:00/24:00 until 06:00/07:00.
Now, of those three shifts, only one of them reliably lines up with MBTA service. So if I was going to take this job, and continue to be car free (a difficult prospect with the amount of kit you need to commute with) and have public transit as a back up, I would *need* to take the night shift. The night shift culture suited me, too. My ride along was a night shift, and most of the EMTs who helped train me were night shift. They were laid back, and also no-nonsense. But I hated the idea of basically dropping out of society in my off-hours because everything shutters after 10:00 in this city, unless alcohol is involved.
I was a hell of an insomniac in high school/college in my small Midwestern city. I used to wander around town on foot or by bike at 3:00 in the morning, and there was always somewhere for me grab a slice, an espresso, a pastry... places with low lighting and comfy chairs and books, and other night owls to sit and be bleary with.
I don't know if that still exists back where I grew up, but I know I've never found it in Boston.
