there have been multiple attempts over the last few years to pass legislation to redefine the definition of ‘sex’ in the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) to be a person’s “biological sex” as determined at birth
the most recent Bill was the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Sex-based Rights) Bill 2026, submitted by Nationals MP Alison Penfold on 25 May

a similar Bill was submitted last year – the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Restoring Biological Definitions) Bill 2025, by Liberal Party Senator Alex Antic & National Party Senator Matthew Canavan

the org “Gender Awareness Australia Limited” (🙄) runs a website called “Binary” (🙄) and is one of the main orgs pushing this issue at the moment. they have a campaign running to raise funds (they’re always grifting) to place billboards & TV / web ads and are contacting any politicians who will meet with them – see https://www.binary.org.au/campaigns for all their recent campaigns & https://www.binary.org.au/male-and-female-define-legally for their current campaign to change the legal definitions of sex
they have close ties with orgs like the Australian Christian Lobby, who are also running anti-trans campaigns. aside from anti-abortion campaigns, almost all of the ACL’s focus is on anti-LGBTIQA+ issues – see https://www.acl.org.au/take-action/
prominent politicians have made public statements committing to pass similar Bills should their parties gain power, including Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor & One Nation Party leader Pauline Hanson (who has previously introduced a Bill to do just that)
