In between, and after, The Birmingham News has always been a part of everything to me.

In one of the earliest editions of The Birmingham News, Rufus Rhodes wrote that "It is the paper of the masses of the people, democratic to the core, the organ of neither clique nor man -- unless it or he be serving Birmingham, Alabama, and the South -- a fearless and independent journal, whose loftiest aspiration is the greatest good to the greatest number."
Whether it always hit those marks, for 134 years, it never lost sight of the goal.
