Just heard an interesting talk about #BioPlastics by [email protected] at #OggCamp.
Alex was trying to make plastics from various materials at the Manchester HackSpace.
He was mostly using a material called Kylozin, which can make a substance called "Nacre", which has potential as a plastic replacement.
His end goal is to make an I-beam from the stuff.

A common soil fungus (Purpureocillium lilacinum BA1S), when combined with calcium and mild alkalinity, speeds up the breakdown of biodegradable plastic (PBAT), offering a greener path for managing agricultural and packaging waste.
Plastics derived from biological matter, or #bioplastics, eg #bamboo are increasingly popular, but they still only make up around half a per cent of the more than 400 million tonnes of #plastics produced each year.
