Scientists Create Durable Biodegradable Bamboo Plastic That’s Stronger Than Petroleum-Based Materials | Happy Eco News

Chinese researchers created biodegradable bamboo plastic with 110 MPa tensile strength that decomposes in soil within 50 days. Published in Nature Communications (October 2025), the material outperforms petroleum-based plastics in terms of strength and stability, while maintaining 90% of its original strength after recycling. This makes it a renewable and recyclable alternative for industrial use.

Heard some scientists invented a #bioplastic that degrades in salt water.

That's not going to replace all uses of #plastic, most of which hinge on the fact that plastic does *not* degrade in water (salty or otherwise).

But that still leaves some uses for it. Any plastic object that's not expected to survive contact with water anyway, like a transparent window on a paper envelope ✉️, could be made of this stuff.

So I'm still gonna call this a win. 👍

¿Os acordáis de que dije que iba a subir la recetina del biomaterial (bioplástico con almidón)?

Pues aquí la tenéis, recién salida del horno para pasarla para hacer un taller en la escuelita la semana que viene 🤓

Scientists unveil bioplastic that degrades at room temperature, and outperforms petroplastics

Plastic pollution is a mounting global issue, but scientists at Washington University in St. Louis have taken a bold step forward by creating a new bioplastic inspired by the structure of leaves. Their innovation, LEAFF, enhances strength, functionality, and biodegradability by utilizing cellulose nanofibers, outperforming even traditional plastics. It degrades at room temperature, can be printed on, and resists air and water, offering a game-changing solution for sustainable packaging.
