[P] "Iain M. Banks ia for kids, read Larry Niven instead."

Fuck. Yeah. I could see that. This is why I want to crawl under a rock until humanity is over, sometimes. But I really want the next Wings of Fire book so, eh.

Not much more to say, really.

[P] Frankly, even Tui's and Pratchett's worst have more nuance, maturity, and complexity to them than GRRM's best. I just wish that more authors would stray from this poisonous notion that a "grown-up" book has to be full of bioessentialism, possessing all the subtlety & nuance of a breeze block. Frankly, I wouldn"t be surprised if those who think like this classify Iain M. Banks and Ursula K. Le Guin as for kids too.

[P] There are unfortunate persons who'd look at me and try and insinuate that A Song of Something or Other is better written than Pratchett's Discworld. How? It has a grasp of nuance so bleakly basic it'd make a toddler blush. I'm starting to think that "grown-up" and "better written" are just synonymous with "lack of nuance" and "tribal bioessentialism." Which makes me more inclined to avoid "grown-up" books.

[P] I mean, I look at all the hard racism, misogyny, typecaating of A Song of Fire and Ice with all of its white saviour & noble savage tropes... This is more well written than Wings of Fire, is it? Oh? It's more grown-up? Look, I don't know which metrics you're judging "grown-up" and "better" by, but NUANCE clearly isn"t it. If you'd said Discworld you would've had a better chsnce. But that's meant for kids too, isn't it?

[P] So many books meant supposedly for adults, written supposedly by adults, rely on simple-minded, dim-witted bigotry that this series of books for children never stoops to. For all of the vaunted valour of a "grown-up" fantasy, the presence of bioessentialism makes those books, games, and films feel like they're meant for the simplest, most bigoted minds. It's deeply frustrating. Yes, WoF IS better written than most.

[P] It makes me want to grab other writers and rub their noses in it. "This! Why not this??? Why do you have to rely on bioessentialism? Why are you typecasting groups based on how they look?? Why are you making deterministic assumptions about everyone in an entire species??? Read these books meant for children and DO BETTER." Tui has given me a taste of how much better things could be, I can't go back from that.

[P] Having read The Hybrid Prince recently and seeing how beyond excellent Tui always is at never, ever just typecasting a group based upon how they look? The complete, total, and utter absence of bioessentialism in her works makes me even more sensitive to how insidiously ubiquitous it is in other media. It's impossible to typecast any group in Wings of Fire due the variety of personalities and intents in each group.

Mama Taber put out a new vid yesterday. In case you don't know, she is a working-class, small family farmer, with a Ph.D in munch, plants, and spotting bullshit, and she and her extended support network do amazing progressive things in the rural south.

Her new video is about botanical sexism. How it came about, how it's being used, how to counter it, and what to do when you see it happening. No major movements are in this space yet, but with sex and sperms and prejudice all in the mix (seriously!), it won't be long until some alt-right smooth-brain fuckwit jumps on this and makes it a thing.

It's a long one; 90-ish minutes, I think, but Mama Taber don't waste no-one's time. Give her a click and an ear. She does amazing work.

[P] That most humans would disagree and refuse to hold this position is precisely why I have such little faith in humanity, and it's why I don't identify with humans. But as a writer, a creator, you should know better, you should be intelligent enough to know why this is poisonous, and you should want to try to challenge it. The moment you include an otherness and punish them? You welcome in humanity's darkest instincts.

[P] Caveat lector for minor spoilers but: "This hybrid queen is damaged and cruel. Oooh! Can I other her? I like thinking about others being punished, it makes me feel better about myself. Mmm. What? Her hybrid son is gentle, kind, decent, and just? Oh, fine! I guess I can't." This should be a goal for every work. It's a human responsibility to fight the instinct to other, and to enjoy seeing otherness suffering.
