The Deorhord: An Old English Bestiary

Dr. Hana Videen, an expert in Old English literature, will discuss her new book with Princeton University Press, The Deorhord: An Old English Bestiary (2024). <br />Dr. Videen will explain how the English language has evolved since the 7th century; even though many of the animals we encounter in everyday life have remained the same for millennia, the words we use to describe them have not, starting with the Old English word for 'animal' itself, 'deor.'<br />Please register at the front desk or by calling the branch at 416-395-5710.<br />

A lovely review from Fortean Times: 'Some animals were good, some bad and some just spontaneously combusting chickens. … [The Deorhord] entertains as much as it educates and contains much gentle humour. The perfect companion for armchair time travellers. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'
