"The library was not yet a third space of meeting and collaborating, but a place where books were hidden."

Beautifully spoken. It makes for a fine entry into _The Dictionary of Things Past_ (The Guermantes Press, Combray 2056).

And your reflection brings back happy memories of young me trawling the dusty aisles of the MIT Barker Library, finding books by location, colour and smell, rather than via the catalogue. That sacred place sadly holds no more actual books: https://mastodon.art/@analogfusion/116648720737063701.

Let's just transfer all human knowledge to AI and throw out the books. 😐 https://fnl.mit.edu/may-june-2026/lament-for-the-mit-libraries/

Oh no! Some 35 years ago, during my PhD studies at the English Cambridge, I spent half a year in the US Cambridge, accompanying my supervisor during his sabbatical. Happy memories of days spent roaming the musty aisles of the Barker library. Whole areas of thinking opened themselves up, my inner mind still sees the books that formed me on those Barker shelves. Hard to fathom that these libraries are no more. Such a loss.

Thank you for the link to this beautifully written lament by #ElisabethCavicchi.
