My first play of Battle of the Bands (aka Band Manager: The Boardgame). It's a semi-cooperative game in which a group of musicians go on tours together, with each of them hoping to gain the most fans.
I found the gameplay quite thematic. In the early stages, teamwork is necessary to meet the requirements to go on tours, but as time goes on, with each musician perfecting their craft and gathering resources, players will break off to go on solo tours - which stand to gain them greater, individual rewards.
There are lots of thematic touches, like the t-shirt "board" and the button pin player markers, which add to the experience. My set of button pins have rusted but, since they only serve as player markers, I hope to replace them with genuine, different coloured band pins. It's a fun game, with lovely retro videogame art, and it lets you create a nice little story.
My musician, after spending time behind bars, was starstruck by a performer and took up the flute - playing ska tunes. He changed musical direction a number of times, went on a massive tour with his bandmates, and ended as a solo electric guitarist - playing calypso music.
It was less about winning and more about going on a journey together… Is what I, a loser, might say.
