I worked in 7 Times Square (a.k.a. Times Square Tower), directly across from 1 Times Square #NYC. We would watch them test patterns on the #ball and test it going up & down.
I went from walking to a #LawFirm at 7 Times Square, to commuting to a law firm at 7 World Trade (across from One World Trade, the #WorldTradeCenter). When I started, #1WTC hadn't opened, the construction elevator still on its face.

The #NYTimes outgrew the building quickly. Apparently, the #printing presses in the basement were so affected by the #subway underneath, they had to put sand under them! They moved to a huge #building on 43rd & stayed there until 2007, expanding to 44th.
Owner Ochs started the #NewYear's celebrations on Dec 31, 1904, & for years they just lit fireworks on the roof until the city outlawed it. The ball drop started that year, 1908.
