Babel Street operates a tool called Locate X which collects phone location info from a LARGE variety of sources. The tool is intended for use by Law Enforcement
The worrisome part is that Babel Street is not properly vetting users. Simply claiming to potentially work WITH Law Enforcement at some point in the future, is enough to gain access. Resulting in a Privacy Nightmare for every phone user everywhere.
Now more than ever, attorneys general in states hostile to reproductive choice will be emboldened to use every tool at their disposal to incriminate those exerting their bodily autonomy. Locate X is a powerful tool they can use to do this. So here are some timely tips to help protect your location privacy.
Location #tracking of phones is out of control. Here’s how to fight back.
You likely have never heard of #BabelStreet or #LocationX , but chances are good that they know a lot about you and anyone else you know who keeps a phone nearby around the clock.

Privacy advocates gained access to a powerful tool bought by U.S. law enforcement agencies that can track smartphone locations around the world. Abortion clinics, places of worship, and individual people can all be monitored without a warrant.
#DataBrokers claim the info is fully anonymized. But in reality, it can easily expose someone’s #identity, & can potentially reveal some of the most private moments of a person’s life—like crossing state lines to go to an #abortion clinic.
NOTUS, along w/journalists from NYT, 404Media, Haaretz & independent #cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs, were given access to nearly 2hrs of footage of #AtlasPrivacy using #BabelStreet’s tracking tool, #LocateX.
Earlier this year, #StartUp company #AtlasPrivacy got access to a #mobile #phone-tracking tool used by #law enforcement & US government agencies across the country. The #tracking tool, sold by Virginia-based company #BabelStreet, pulls commercially available #data that #phones beam out through apps. Atlas researchers were looking for #privacy & #security vulnerabilities in the data for sale.
