Not sure when this happened, but I've just found out that At The Sign Of The Dragon, a really rather good SF&F specialist second-hand bookshop in Wigtown has closed, due to the death of the owner.

I only got to go there once, a couple of years ago. He had a shed in the garden for the non-SF&F stock, and then the garage and one room in his house (accessed through his kitchen!) were absolutely stuffed full of the SF&F books.

A real loss.

Last night I dreamed that I was in a large used book shop with very high ceilings and dark wood furnishings - including sliding ladders. There was an unbelievable number of books everywhere, but they weren't particularly organized.

The shop owner was an odd-looking man, very tall and thin with brown hair. He could find any book that you asked for; he found several for me. But there was a Twilight-Zone feeling to the place. Finally I asked him for a book that I couldn't identify. I couldn't remember the title or author; I kept trying to fish in my memory for something that would help him, like "It was from the 60's or 70's, I think, and it had a feeling of that era. Not unlike something by certain other hip authors of the time. I think maybe it was set in New York City? I know it was in English."

But I couldn't give him enough information, so he evaporated in front of my eyes.
