BMOP’s #AsToldBy presentation of Ulysses Kay’s final opera, Frederick Douglass, is included in The Arts Fuse’s “Top Classical Recordings and Concerts of 2025”. Aaron Keebaugh writes, “In this memorable performance, #BMOP, aided by a starry cast of singers & led by conductor Gil Rose, reveled in the piece’s tension & intrigue.”

#ICYMI, this convo between #OdysseyOpera’s Artistic Director, Gil Rose, and GBH’s @gbhnews’s Arun Rath about Ulysses Kay’s final opera, Frederick Douglass. “…one of the things we seek to do is to redress that wrong and bring composers who are important American composers into the light.” • https://www.wgbh.org/music/2025-07-08/a-forgotten-opera-celebrating-an-abolitionist-leaders-life-is-brought-back-to-the-stage

Owen Johnson reviews for the Boston Musical Intelligencer, writing, “…the choir is well-prepared for the often-complex counterrhythms required of them. The balance between the singers and orchestra is perfect, and they are never subsumed by Kay’s dense orchestration… Ulysses Kay’s Frederick Douglass is a welcome revival… Through @bmop & #OdysseyOpera’s expert performance, Dorr’s libretto & Kay’s music reached new heights.” • https://www.classical-scene.com/2025/06/23/shining-douglass/

Shining a Light on Frederick Douglass - The Boston Musical Intelligencer

Ulysses Kay’s opera Fredrick Douglass painted a powerful portrait of a larger-than-life figure grappling with his own legacy in the Odyssey Opera-BMOP premiere at Jordan Hall on Friday.

#BMOP and @Odysseyopera would like to thank all who attended #AsToldBy's performance of Ulysses Kay's opera, Frederick Douglass, last evening.

Preparing this work has been particularly meaningful since it is the first time the opera has been heard in its entirety in nearly 35 years. This opera is a welcome addition to the catalogue of works that constitutes the multiyear series, As Told By: History, Race, and Justice on the Opera Stage.
