Preparing this work has been particularly meaningful since it is the first time the opera has been heard in its entirety in nearly 35 years. This opera is a welcome addition to the catalogue of works that constitutes the multiyear series, As Told By: History, Race, and Justice on the Opera Stage.

This evening these Jordan Hall seats will be filled when #AsToldBy brings Ulysses Kay’s magnum opus, Frederick Douglass, to the stage after nearly 35 years.
At 6:30 PM, ticket holders are invited to attend a pre-concert panel about Douglass, and the creation of this opera, which was supported by grants to Kay and librettist Donald Dorr from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mellon Foundation.
