I suppose the hommage à rothko is a little too obvious here, but I swear I was also thinking of Yves Klein. And anyway the whole thing is really meant as a creative response to the experience of seeing Sunn O))) about 10 days before I painted it

I’d also like the record to show that I didn’t ever sketch the outline of the big blocky form. I started in the middle, and did the whole thing by squirting paint out of the tube directly onto the paper, and then using a brush to move it around
