I’m bothered by the lack of distinction between generative AI and non-generative AI (also called traditional machine learning, traditional AI, analytical AI) in nearly all AI coverage and commentary. Collapsing different types of AI into one term, “AI,” promotes confusion and misinformation about what we really need to pay attention to and be concerned about. When products, for example, are described as “using AI” or “having AI,” it tells me nothing about what is actually being used or whether there are ethical issues involved, e.g., theft of creators’ works by gen AI. Non-gen AI has been around for a while and does not share the same ethical issues as generative AI. To help your readers and those around you understand what you mean, please specify the type of AI or, if the AI combines forms, how gen AI and non-gen AI are used together. If someone has a better read on this topic, preferably one without a heavy bias toward gen AI, please share. I’m also unsure of the best term for non-gen AI, since “non-gen AI” centers gen AI, so if you use another term, please drop it in the comments. I am still learning the lingo, but I don’t want my lack of knowledge on this subject to prevent me from asking for or offering help. Thank you!

We've been hearing announcements about possible #artificial #blood for as long as I've been in #medicine and #research (over thirty years at this point) and none of them have ever panned out. Sooner or later, presumably, one of them will—and if this turns out to be it, great. But I'm not holding my breath.
