Liquid #Biaxin / #clarithromycin might be available, but supply has been limited lately. Call the pharmacy and ask if they have it before coming in.

#Zithromax / #Azithromycin is easier to find (for now). Same with #Cefzil / #cefprozil , #Keflex / #cephalexin , & #Suprax / #cefixime .

Note: I'm familiar with #ShoppersDrugMart / #loblaw inventory. #Rexall or #Walmart use a different supplier, they might have something we don't. #antibioticshortage #LondonON #ldnont /4

When reading the #prescription , especially from #lhsc or #victoriahospital , note that #amoxicillin 250mg/5mL is different from one that reads amoxicillin 80mg- #clavulanic acid 11mg (aka #clavulin / #clavulanate . That one is more readily available in #LondonON #ldnont #pharmacies . If in doubt, call ahead and ask.

#amoxicillin suspension (the banana #medicine ) is almost impossible to find in #LondonON #ldnont outside of a #compoundingpharmacy . #capsules are available in 250 & 500mg, and can be opened & mixed with honey, applesauce, etc. Ask the #dr abt #prescribing one of those doses if there's no alternative. Same goes for other liquid #antibiotics : if a tab or capsule can be split/crushed, #pharmacies #pharmacist can help, but not if the dose is 267mg or whatever. #antibioticshortage /2

#LondonON #ldnont parents: if you're in the unfortunate position of having a sick kid right now, and you need #antibioics , GET THE #doctor TO PRESCRIBE AN ALTERNATIVE IN CASE THEIR FIRST CHOICE IS UNAVAILABLE! Liquid #suspensions might be hard to find right now because of #backorders and the #pharmacy might not have any. Getting an alternative on the #rx means we don't have to contact dr to get one. #antibioticshortage 🧵/1

Pediatricians shouldn't have to call asking what #antibiotic pharmacies have in any strength & form (suspension chewable, or capsule), yet I've done that this week. My patient got their last bottle of amox/clauv. They only had one bottle of azithromycin after that.

There's also shortages of #stimulants, #Albuterol, and more.

Calls increase work for everyone prescribing and filling meds, in addition to people spending time driving all over to find meds.

I'm on call this weekend trying to find #antibiotics for kids in local pharmacies. Since some are having to wait, I want to remind parents that delaying treatment is frustrating, but things can still be managed at home. I wrote a bit about #strep treatment during this #AntibioticShortage.

Apparently there's a nationwide antibiotics shortage. I had to figure out what the pharmacy had and let our doctor know so that we could get a script for an ear infection. Not only is this an indicator of where we are with respiratory infections right now, this is also a preview of what's going to happen once more antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria evolve.
