Hold your position, make tactical retreats if necessary, but keep the core of truth alive.
The tide is moving against us, in so many dimensions. Covid brought upon us a new wave of eugenicism; the far right is on the rise everywhere; genAI threatens our mental autonomy. The US constitional arrangement disintegrates. Big Business has taken over the UK Labour government. The horrors of the Middle East.
All of these developments amplify each other. There is no way for us to succeed against this powerful confluence of developments just right now. Things will get worse still.
But the tide will turn, eventually.
Our task is to maintain islands of integrity, wherever we can. To maintain a living memory of what it means to speak the truth, to be kind, to be authentic, to recognise facts, to listen.
That will not always be possible, but try we must.

The Angel of History
Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage.
Forest wars and the angel of history
Nothing shall stand in the way of making money
"Forestry Tasmania lodged legal action seeking $6,200 damages from Ms Beltran over her disruptions to native forest logging. Her angel protest had been blocking a road, and police also wanted compensation.Tasmanian government authorities taking legal action against an angel. It was an amazing story."
"Native forest logging continues in most regions, and the Tasmanian government has introduced harsher penalties for protest activity that disrupts public roads and stops businesses from making money."
"A Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress."

The Storyteller: Tales Out of Loneliness gathers for the first time the fiction of the legendary critic and philosopher Walter Benjamin. Each text in the book is accompanied by a Paul Klee illustration. Below, Stuart Jeffries examines the meaning that Klee's Angelus Novus held for Benjamin. In 1921, Walter Benjamin bou
