When Sorrows Encompass Me 'Round by Magic Tuber Band, released on Feeding Tube Records in 2021.

As on their first album, Wayward Airs for Earthbound Vagrants (Blue Hole MC), Magic Tuber also display a somewhat Fahey-esque hand with song titles. The first three on this one are “Quarry Ate the Mountain,” “Waltz for Things with Wings,” and “Devil on a Root Monster.” But as good as those titles are, the tunes are better. The vibe reminds me of a pared-down version of Jack Rose’s work with the Black Twig Pickers, in the way it manages to keep one foot in the tradition without sounding at all hidebound.

When Sorrows Encompass Me 'Round is a great (and dare I say, joyous) sophomore effort by a most wonderful band. I hope to hear more from them soon, and so will you.

The Seal of the Blue Lotus is the debut studio album of composer and guitarist Robbie Basho, released in 1965 by Takoma Records.

Skip Jansen, of Allmusic, favorably compared Basho's Eastern-influenced musical approach to that of John Fahey and noted the influence of Ravi Shankar. Jansen gave the album four out of five stars, concluding that it is "An essential document for folk guitar fans." - Wikipedia

Ended the weekend and welcomed the working week after my swim with Seven Years Late
by Hayden Pedigo his debut LP
released in 2013 on experimental Austin label Marmara Records.

"Hayden Pedigo is an acoustic guitarist and soundscape composer from Amarillo, Texas. Hayden spent his teen years woodshedding the American primitive guitar picking styles of John Fahey combined with experimental sound manipulation and by his early 20s he had already collaborated with luminaries such as Charles Hayward of This Heat, Fred Frith, Werner Diermaier of Faust and Terry Allen."

Odei by Shane Parish, released by Marmara Records in 2015.

..The album is a solo guitar set, and it argues that obscure sounds and inviting ones are not mutually exclusive. The sequence of Odei jars you, messes with expectations. We go from the quick-fire rattle of “Blind Contour” to the ruminant, eight minutes of atmosphere of “The Swallow”, from the stately phrasings and rundowns of “Rare Cry Blue” to the percussive sound experiments of “Barricades”.

As with Ahleuchatistas, you can’t help but feel the tensions here are as political as they are personal, but there’s also a sense of playfulness in all this expression, even a sense of escape. There’s something almost spiritual in the execution that aligns Parish with the likes of Robbie Basho. Unlike Basho, though, Parish carves out spaces, defines the quiet around him rather than filling it up. - Liner Notes

Ended yesterday and welcomed today with Impossible Truth the second studio album by musician and guitarist William Tyler, which was his first release on Merge Records, and it was produced by Mark Nevers. The album received critical acclaim.

...At Blurt, Jennifer Kelly felt that the release is "like both an empirical observation and an epiphany, a glimpse of the glow behind the world itself."[4] Jayson Greene of Pitchfork called this a "richly satisfying and absorbing record of solo guitar in three years", which he proclaimed it was "gorgeously recorded", and wrote that the album "never once grows tiring." - Wikipedia

John Fahey, Live in Hamburg on Rockpalast (March 17, 1978)

YouTube

Akustisch kann man den Zug am Ende von "Pet Sounds/Caroline, No" auf demselben Gleis zu einem anderen Genie derselben Zeit (1967) fahren lassen: zu John Fahey, Vater des "American Primitive" und seinen "A Raga Called Pat I & II".

Zwei Amerikas, zwei Avantgardes.

Brian und John. Küste und Wüste.

A Raga Called Pat - Part One -- John Fahey

#nowplaying Peter Lang - The Thing at the Nursery Room Window. A nightcap spin around some #fingerstyle guitar that is quick, light and sharp. A 1973 Takoma Records album (John Fahey’s label) and definitely of that era in its humorous titles, somewhat stodgy yet inventive playing, and general high quality factor. A good score on my way to music practice this evening. Great cover too.
