Birthday drinks #LittleCreaturesBrewing
Enjoying the #AmberAle it tastes like a mashup of Newcastle Brown Ale and a classic Marston's bitter..very enjoyable in this heat 🥵
The legend... returns! Red Tail Ale was among the first of its kind in the late 1980's, sold in 22oz bottles at Liquor Barn and some Safeway stores. Boont Amber was a surprise find on a long weekend in Mendocino County; I came back with bottles from both breweries. Over the subsequent 35 years, Anderson Valley chose to grow modestly, and remains locally owned to this day. Mendocino brewing tried to grow aggressively, trading quality for volume and flaming out in 2018. So it was a surprise and delight to see Fogbelt Brewing bringing back the original Red Tail.
Both are solid examples of the style. Red Tail is more hopped, with a mild nose, sweeter up front, and more bitter through the finish. Boont Amber is darker with a much stronger caramel malt nose and flavor, considerably more complex IMHO, and smoother through to the finish. I think folks raised on IPAs would lean to the new Red Tail; those of us who lean towards German malty ales will likely favor the Boont.
Back when we had a rotation, this was one of the regulars with Boont Amber, Alaskan Amber, Fat Tire (before they ruined it), and Red Trolley. Not as famous as its brandmates, it remains a nice little amber, with the flowery bite of a pale ale, but more malty, especially on the nose. A steal at $10/6-pack.
Reminds me I haven't been to the brewery since B.K. (Before kids.) At the very least I need to replace my “Old 38 Stout” T-shirt that's now just a rag.

Alas!

This one's interesting. It's kinda borderline as a red or amber: not enough malt, too much hops, especially in the (quite bitter) finish. My son characterized it as a pale ale. But to me it's a dead ringer for Tied House's amber, which I considered their best beer. It's pricey: $4.50 each for these tall cans at Trader Joe's, the same as Stone Arrogant Bastard. But what price is there on memories? 🙂
Missed brew #3 yesterday- #MacAndJacks African #amber ale. A dry hopped amber it has a nice body and a smooth hoppy finish. Good compliment to cheese curd pepper appetizers.
Double Nugget Nectar, the limited edition imperial #AmberAle from #TröegsIndependentBrewing, returns once again, featuring a fruity blast of hops and a hefty 9.5% alcohol by volume. The brewery released it in 16-ounce cans as well as on draft.
