🚨Breaking news! Let's Encrypt is *almost* ready to issue IP address certificates—just not to you. 😂 Expect 6-day certificates under an exclusive 'allowlist' that you can't access yet. But don't worry, they'll keep doing "more work" with the urgency of a sloth in a hammock. 🙄💤

Getting ready to issue IP address certificates

Is there anything public available on which IPs will be able to get certs? I mean, obviously private/reserved ranges won't be available, but how about all those "cloud" services that rent IPs by the hour (or second)? Is it expected to be "normal" that someone could release an IP back into a pool and yet still have a valid certificate for almost-a-week, or will Let's Encrypt certificates only be available for IPs that are slightly less ephemeral?

As it is the Fedi is (still) actively hostile to women and BIPOC. Good people leave because harassment and block evasion are too easy and moderation insufficient on most large servers or nonexistent in small ones.

Maybe a large number of better moderated servers should switch to an allowlist model and better reply controls (on who gets to reply to posts). On top of that, using shared blocklists if some of the allowed servers misbehave.

It will break the fediverse as we know it, but that's not a bad thing as it's already broken by abusers. Most large instances will likely not be on allowlists as they're geared from growth, not community safety.

I am a #Remote #volunteer #HighSchool #ComputerScience #teacher. I have volunteered in several #US states. And it's been my experience that schools don't have a #BlockList; they have an #AllowList.

This should not surprise anyone. There is not an inclusive list of all age-inapproprate sites on the internet. It's orders of magnitude easier to only allow sites that faculty specifically request.

My experience as a parent backs this up. When our kids were teenagers, my ex tried to filter the internet. The teens started using the neighbors' wifi.

If you think about it #allowlist #federation is basically what #IRC networks do nowadays (it used to be similar to #email where everyone is connected to one another, until the inevitable permanent #eris #netsplit that led to #EFnet which provided precedent for future netsplits)
@selea They probably just imported the list of all domains their main instance at fedi.tax has federated with. Pretty nice way to bootstrap an #allowlist instance tbh

I'm kinda lucky my instance got included actually

@rune
Oooh somebody is actually doing an #allowlist / #optin #federation here in the #fediverse!

Very cool

Found 39 new servers and 28 servers died off since 3 hours ago. 23,909 servers checked. 13,877,150 Total Users with 1,662,170 Active Users today. Check out ...

You never had the choice from the beginning. #Mastodon started with #OStatus and you already got the "weirdos" who don't follow "Mastodon etiquette" and format that are from #GNUsocial, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, etc.

#Pleroma soon joined, and then #Misskey started federating too... Rest is history. :seija_coffee:

The
#fediverse was always #optout. And the documentation even strongly discourages making it #optin (i.e. #allowlist #federation)!

A better vision for a near-future fedi requires an exercise of both the technical and social imagination, and another thing that Meta's collaborators appear to find elusive: a moral center.

Instead of a regression into another Zuckerberg-controlled nightmare of hate speech, harassment, "brand engagement" and dehumanizing surveillance, we can push forward into an intentional federation based on consent and community, which centers the non-negotiable requirement of safety for everyone who otherwise has the most to lose from the betrayal of this online space of refuge and resistance.
