Photographing in Congo is very difficult. Until a few decades ago, people were made to believe that photographs steal your soul, so many are wary of a camera. Others immediately want to be paid if you photograph their drinks stall or something similar (which I prefer to refuse).
It is, of course, a society where you have to survive every single day. Not just live — every day is a struggle, and you feel that constantly in everyday interactions.
For this photo, however, there was no problem at all, an image taken on the banks of the Congo River.
It was ten years ago, and through my job I was able to travel to Australia, with Congo in Africa afterwards. Because I was afraid of losing, for example, my Canon A1, I only took two Chinon SLR cameras with me (at the time I saw them as more replaceable, and they were lighter in my luggage and around my neck).
